CDS General Rawat was working on a big plan to organize all the three forces. His effort was to develop the three services into a single armed force that would integrate their capabilities, equipment and men. Its objective is to reduce expenditure, rationalize manpower and ensure that the armed forces fight as a cohesive unit. Within three years, he was also entrusted with the responsibility of reorganizing the forces and making them ‘theater commands’. The theater command project he was working on, that project would have played an important role in dealing with the threats coming from China and Pakistan.
CDS General Bipin Rawat also had a major contribution in self-reliance and indigenization in the defense sector. For the last five-six years, only indigenous weapons were being given preference in the Army, Air Force and Navy, so a big credit for this goes to General Rawat. Even if foreigners were buying weapons and military equipment, efforts were made to manufacture them in the country itself under Make in India. This was the reason why the Army agreed to take the indigenous Arjun tank and the Air Force agreed to take the LCH attack helicopter. General Bipin Rawat will always be known for reforms in the defense sector.
